Welcome to the Arlington Study of Healthy Aging

We are focused on understanding mechanisms causing functional decline with age.

What is ASHA?

The Arlington Study of Healthy Aging (ASHA) is a single-site, multiethnic community cohort study that will use advanced imaging, genetics and multi-omics, exercise science, neuroscience and remote monitoring to investigate age-related declines in health and lessen disease impact on older adults.

About the Study

Advanced Imaging

Volunteers will receive a free MRI of their brain, heart and legs. Each MRI will last between 60 – 90 minutes.

Genome Sequencing and Multi-Omics

You will be asked to give a small amount of blood. This will be used to further our understanding of the factors that contribute to age-related changes.

Remote Monitoring

Volunteers will receive a monitor to measure physical activity, sleep, blood pressure and blood sugar.

Strength, Agility, Frailty, Fitness

Participants will be assessed for physical functioning, including muscle strength and mobility.

Neurocognition

Participants will undergo tests that assess memory, language, attention and executive function and smell.

Vascular Health

Participants will undergo tests that assess the condition of the blood vessels in the body.

Who is eligible to join?

You may be eligible to join The Arlington Study of Healthy Aging if you are:

Between the ages of 18 to 30
or 50 to 85 years old

Currently live in Tarrant County

Why should I join?

The Arlington Study of Healthy Aging (ASHA) is a research study that will be a valuable resource used to understand how age contributes to health and disease. The purpose of the ASHA is to gather health-related information, or data, about you and many other people for research. Participating in this research will help us learn more about the human body as it ages and help us lessen the negative outcomes associated with age.

What is involved?

If you choose to participate in The Arlington Study of Healthy Aging, you will answer several surveys. You will perform cognitive testing and a smell test. You will undergo testing of your vasculature and physical ability as well as imaging of your heart, brain and muscles. You may provide a blood sample for laboratory testing. This health information will be protected. This study will consist of two in-person visits in which each visit can last from 2 to 6 hours each.
